Last week, I found a blog post with 101 ways to monetize your blog. One of the ways they mentioned was allowing your visitors to subscribe and get your blog updates on their phone through SMS messaging. I thought “That would be cool!”, and finally took the time to check it out tonight.
The site that provides the service is TextMarks.com. You can choose either a $4.99 or $9.99 monthly subscription charge for your users, and then add a widget to your blog for them to sign-up. A lion’s share of the revenue stays with the wireless carrier, and TextMarks, but it does end up bringing in about 30% back to you. So, on the $4.99 subscription, you get $1.50 and the $9.99 subscription ends up bringing back $3.00.
I don’t really see this being very successful for a personal blog, but for a blog about sports, investments, entertainment, or horoscopes, this could be very successful. If you had 1,000 subscribers on the $9.99/month plan, that would be $3,000/month in revenue from mobile subscribers.
We will definitely be looking into this closer this year for our development in the Forex Market. I believe it would be very possible to get 10,000 subscribers in the right market, which has the potential for $30,000/month.
Every day, I am seeing more and more services like this that are making it very easy for someone with very little technical knowledge implement technology that many companies paid hundreds of thousands for only a couple years ago.
