Success leaves footprints

Last night, I got a call from my good friend, Robby Leblanc asking me to take a look at a few other blogs to see how they were getting some special listings in Google. The blogs
were
from some
major marketers, including
Alex Mandossian,
Armand Morin, and
Michel Fortin.
The blogs were from some major marketers, including Alex Mandossian, Armand Morin, and Michel Fortin.

What Robby noticed was that under each of their listings in Google, there was a number of links to other areas of their blog and then finally, a link to see more more pages from their blog. Robby had his guy offshore check it out and he found it looked like another sitemap plugin.

As it turns out, I already had the same plugin installed on this blog. However, after I moved servers, some file permissions were screwed up, and the plugin was no longer maintaining my XML sitemap. Well, of course I fixed that problem today, and now I am waiting to see how long it take before a google update. Hopefully this post tonight will trigger some activity.

If you’re interested to see what these special lsitings look like, simply do a google search for Armand Morin.

At first when Robby was telling me about it, I thought he was talking about “indented listings” that Andy Jenkins from Stompernet! showed how to do in their “Going Natural 2″ videos. But as you can see from the search from Armand this is different.

You can tell this is definitely related to the sitemap based on the url used for the extra links in Google.

I alos took some time to clean up some other plugin issues and add a new banner for my Twitter Tactics videos. I am giving away the videos showing how to link a Wordpress blog with twitter to increase your traffic. When I first made this change, my traffic increased by 700%.

Watch for the new banner in the upper right section, and give it a click to get the videos for free.

  1. Hey Kevin!

I think I learned about this thru a Stompernet video too. I hadn’t seen it associated with a person’s name before.

There are many things a blogger type blog can do like a WP blog. Any idea if this is one of them?

Thanks for the write up. If success leaves footprints, how do we recognize them sometimes? Maybe it’s my ’seeing’ that needs work.

    I’m open to your thoughts,

  2. Hi Pam,

This is actually different than the Stompernet video. The indented listing like in the Stompernet video are definitely achievable even on Blogger. This looks like it should be as well, but maybe not as easy. At first, all of the examples we found were Wordpress blogs using the same plugin for generating a XML sitemap. However the last one we found doesn’t even have a sitemap, and doesn’t appear to be a Wordpress blog. The description in Google’s webmaster tools eludes to the fact there are many factors determining whether or not Sitelinks show up.

For now, I am testing the pattern I saw with the first blogs which is the sitemap. After fixing my issues on my blog regarding sitemap, the was a huge spidering going on according to my stats. I found a few more steps in webmaster tools for submitting you sitemap to google along with a meta tag to add to your site to get more detailed Google information about your site including any broken links or missing pages it is finding when they spider. I’ll probably put togethor a training video later next week with what I found this weekend research the Sitelinks features.

  3. Hi Kevin,

So I’m quivering with suspense, wondering what is this plug-in for WordPress that makes the XML. Can you let us know what it is called? I would love to try it for my blog too!

    Thanks and warm regards,

    Bradley

  4. Hi Bradley,

The Plugin is the Google Sitemap Generator Plugin from Arne Brachhold. It can be found under the plugins directory on Wordpress.org, or from Arne directly at http://www.arnebrachhold.de/redir/sitemap-home/

It is not confirmed that this is the solution for sitelinks to show up. My blog was last cahced on July 13th, so I am waiting for an update to see what happens. Besides having the sitemap on your site, you also should submit it to Google through the webmaster tools.

  5. The particular Stompernet video is here http://about.stompernet.com/library/video/going-natural-2-0-andy-jenkins-presents-how-double-your-traffic-and-triple-your-profit

  6. Added. Nice work on this one. Btw, my blog is dofollow, stop by and grab a link. Walter
