Market Research Through Online Media Kits

When researching a niche, one of the things I do is look for other sites within the niche and grade what kind of traffic they are getting. Many times, this will include sites related to offline magazines within the niche. If you can find a magazine within the niche that also has an online presence (most of them do these days), you will usually find a link at the bottom of the main page for advertising, or media kit.
Sometimes, the media kits are very basic with cost breakdowns for the differnt banner areas of the sites. Most times, if it is a mainstream magazine, you can strike it rich. You can actually find information like; age groups, household incomes, other magazines they read, types of products they buy. Remember, most magazines are also renting their lists through different list broker, so this type of information is needed to market the list.
For example, tonight I went out to google and did a search for fishing media kit, and found Sport Fishing Magazine’s media kit. Here is the link to their demographic media kit: http://www.sportfishingmag.com/PDF/advertising/2008/SF08_print/SF_demo08.pdf
They have other media kit information as well available here: http://www.sportfishingmag.com/advertise/print/sport-fishing-52379.html
You can find media kits in almost any market, this is actually a quicker way to analyze your market size and demographics than going to the library to find the SRDS.
