Reading through my RSS feeds this morning, I came across one post from Seth Godin that was very timely, that I thought I would share with you.
I say timely, because I spoke with another marketer this week, that has been trying to make it work online for 19 months, and is finally at the point of giving up. One of the problems we often run into is dropping what we are currently doing and trying something new. I see this constantly, and frequently have to take a reality check myself to stay on track.
The key to online success is to build a business and not chase the next opportunity that arrives in your inbox. One way I resist the temptation is using folders within thunderbird for all the marketing messages from lists I belong to. This way, I am collecting some great copy for my swipe file, without being tempted to get caught up in “Launch Fever”.

In Seth’s post, he gives some concrete examples of huge successes that were flops in the beginning. They turned out to be a success through patience. They let their business build and were not worried about overnight success. He also reveals the four traps we often fall victim to.
“The trap: Show up at a new social network, invest two hours, be really aggressive with people, make some noise and then leave in disgust.
The trap: Use all your money to build a fancy website and leave no money or patience for the hundred revisions you’ll need to do.
The trap: read the tech blogs and fall in love with the bleeding-edge hip sites and lose focus on the long-term players that deliver real value.
The trap: sprint all day and run out of energy before the marathon even starts.”
