I picked up a new book today at Barnes and Nobles called Advanced Web Metrics with Google Analytics.  I have been using Google Analytics for over a year now, but I am always suprised how much i don’t know.

One can really get lost when analyzing website metrics.  There is just so much information you can look at while looking at your website performance.  i have only had a chance to glance through the book, but this is a thick, well illustrated book dedicated solely to Google Analytics.

There are plenty of analytics software packages out there, but Google give theirs away for free.  It used to be a very expensive package itself called Urchin until Google bought it and unleashed it on the world.  The book goes into the top 10 reports and argues the fact that it is possible to over-analyze your site.  There is also an eye opening example of improving conversion by just 1% and the effect it can have on your net profit for an ecommerce site.

The short story is.  No matter what type of site you have you should be tracking your visitor actions and improving their experience in order to increase your traffic.  If you are running a website to make money you should take that analysis a step further and identify what in your sales process could be improved to create more conversions.  This book looks like a real winner.  I’ll be giving a more in depth review of the book in November along with some case study videos of the information I was able to pull out the book and apply to my online business.

Good night,
Kevin
