A small and growing group of internet entrepreneurs are making a decent living online by promoting other people’s products, through what is known as an affiliate program.
While there are many affiliate programs run by individual companies, there are also affiliate networks such as Commission Junction, Linkshare and Clickbank. I will discuss here about Clickbank, which is the world’s largest digital marketplace, selling all kinds of digitally delivered products.
Getting started with the Clickbank affiliate program is easy. Just apply for an affiliate account with Clickbank, and if you reside in an approved country, you can immediately start promoting products from the Clickbank marketplace.
Although it is easy to get started as an affiliate, it is also very competitive, as you will be competing with tens of thousands of other marketers who also have the access to the very same products. Choosing a good product to promote is very important – you have to do some basic research to find out if the product will be a good fit for you, the market potential, and the quality of the sales letter.
Many affiliates will do some pre-selling to qualify the leads that they send to the vendor’s sales page. This is known to increase conversion rates as only those that have some level of interest will see the sales page. I would recommend that you purchase the product you are promoting and review it sincerely, this will show in your online “tone of voice” when you are promoting the product.
You must be a master at generating targeted traffic to the sales page, to be able to make some money from the few who will purchase the product. Traffic can be gotten in many says, some are free such as link exchanges, forum postings, etc, and some are paid such as ezine advertising and Pay-per-click ads.
The key is to take consistent action to generate the required volume of traffic, which will then convert at a rate of between 0.1% for a bad sales copy to about 3-5% for excellently written sales copy.
A tactic often used by the super-affiliates is to send the traffic that you have generated to a name-squeeze-page, where an e-course or free report is offered in exchange for the visitor’s email address – this builds up your email list, which can then be followed up, and sent recommendations for other similar products as well.
Treat your affiliate marketing like any real business. That means investing the necessary time and money into it, including learning new and better ways of doing things, as well as investing in products and tools that help to run the business.
Set yourself some goals, be positive, and take massive action now to achieve your dreams!
