Before I get into article writing and if and how article writing might influence your email open rates, let?s talk about email open rates first.

What is an email open rate? An email open rate is the percentage of emails that you send out that are opened. So for example, if I send out 100 emails, and 27 of them are opened, then I have an email open rate of 27%.

Now, when you first start a list, you might have email open rates of 50% to 100%, depending on the strength of your initial offer. But unless you are giving away free gold in every email, your email open rates are going to level out at somewhere between 20% and 40% in the long run.

What influences open rates?

Before we can talk about that, I think we must ask what type of open rate am I looking to increase?

Short term or long term? You see, in the short term, I can influence the open rate of my email by using a crazy subject line like ?open this and receive a free $5 bill? Now if you actually come through and give away the $5 bill to each open, then they will continue to open your emails at a high rate, right? But as soon as you do not deliver, then your long-term email open rate will go down.

Now, there are a lot of lessons to be learned from that story. First, anytime you influence your email open rates short term with offers that are not as good as their respective titles, your email open rate will go down long run. Now, think about this. Would you rather have a one-time open rate of 50% with a subsequent long-term open rate of 25% or would you rather have a continuous open rate of 30% long term. I would far rather the latter.

So what do articles have to do with it?

Articles are an easy way to deliver free information to your readers and it literally costs you nothing. The nice thing about articles is that as long as you write about the same thing as your subject line, your readers? long term open rate will not go down as a result of reading the article, and you have not negatively influenced the life of your email campaign by promising more than you can deliver.
