Technology Is Fantastic!
Dec 26th, 2009 | By Kevin | Category: blogging, personalFor the holidays, I am in Chandler, Arizona visiting my Mom and Sister. While my sister has high speed internet through Qwest, my Mom does not. So I have been walking over to my sisters off and on when I needed a faster connection. Otherwise, i have been relying on my Blackberry, tethered to my laptop by USB for my internet connection, and i must say it has been working great.
Tonight was a test, with installing some new plugins and updating some posts on my sisters new teachers blog at http://www.marylouodell.com . It worked great. The plugins are small enough it wasn’t a big deal downloading them from wordpress.org and uploading them to the site. The theme would have taken a bit longer, but still manageable. Of course I miss the occasional Youtube video, but I could work remotely for most of my daily tasks with just my Blackberry and laptop.
More and more place are now offering free wi-fi around the country which is an added bonus. In Salt Lake, Barnes and Nobles, Borders, and Paradise Bakery all provide free wi-fi now.
I checked out the availability of wi-fi on the ship this morning for the upcoming cruise, and it is available via their satellite system but it comes at a price. $100 for 250 minutes. Part of the cost of doing business I guess. It will be hard for us to be totally disconnected from the online business, so i guess we’ll pay the price. The bonus will be being able to use my blackberry for calling over the wi-fi using T-mobiles UMA connection. It will be a true test of the Blackberry, and it’s worldwide use.
Until next time,
Kevin
